What is local SEO for lawyers?

Local SEO for lawyers is how you make your law firm easy to find when someone in your area searches for legal help. It covers two places on Google. The first is the map results, the short list of firms with pins that appears near the top of the page. The second is the regular results underneath, where your website pages compete.

Think about who is searching. A person who was just hurt, sold a bad car, or got a letter from a debt collector is not browsing. They type a question or a phrase like "car accident lawyer near me" and they call one of the first firms they see. Local SEO is about being one of those firms.

You'll also hear it called "SEO for lawyers." The two terms overlap. Local SEO is the part that depends on where you practice. For most firms, that part drives the most phone calls.

Does local SEO actually work for a law firm?

It can, and we have the numbers from a real case. Rob was the Director of Marketing in-house at a California consumer law firm from 2017 to 2019. In January 2019 he ran an SEO plan on that firm's website. About six weeks later, in mid-February 2019, this is what had changed:

  • The firm went from zero page-one rankings to 9 of its main target keywords on page one.
  • The new pages also reached page one for 16 more keywords that have monthly search volume.
  • Overall website traffic rose 30%.
  • The new pages brought in over 30% of the site's traffic. The homepage brought in 42%.
  • The website produced 20+ phone calls, measured with a call tracking number.
  • Organic leads rose 50%, so the firm cut its monthly ad spend from $3,000 to $300.

The full story, including exactly what was built, is in our local SEO case study for a law firm. Two honest notes. This was one firm in one practice area, and results will differ for yours. And the work was done in 2019, before AI search changed how people look for lawyers. We cover that below.

How does your Google Business Profile affect map results?

Your Google Business Profile is the listing that shows your firm's name, address, phone number, hours, reviews and photos. It's what appears in the map results, so it's the first thing a nearby searcher sees. If it's thin, wrong or ignored, you lose calls before anyone reaches your website.

Here is what to get right:

  • Your name, address and phone number must match your website. Use the same format everywhere. Small differences confuse Google and confuse people.
  • Pick the right main category. "Law firm" is generic. If you do one kind of work, choose the category that fits it, then add the others as secondary categories.
  • List your services. Add each practice area with a short, plain description.
  • Add real photos. Your office, your building and your team. Skip stock images.
  • Post updates. A short post a couple of times a month shows the profile is alive.
  • Answer questions and messages. Slow replies cost you leads.

If you have more than one office, each office needs its own profile and its own page on your website. A page for your Tucson office should not be the same page as your Los Angeles office with the city name swapped.

How do reviews affect local rankings and calls?

Reviews do two jobs. They help you appear in the map results, and they help a stranger decide to call you. When two firms are close in the list, the one with more recent, specific reviews usually gets the call.

Here is how to handle them:

  1. Ask every happy client. The best time is right after a good result. Send a direct link to your review page by text or email.
  2. Ask for details. A review that says what the problem was and how the firm helped is worth more than "great lawyer."
  3. Reply to every review, good or bad. Keep replies short, polite and free of private case information.
  4. Never buy or fake reviews. It breaks Google's rules and can get your profile removed.

Check your state bar's rules on client reviews and advertising before you build a review process. Rules differ by state, and your own ethics counsel has the final say.

What pages does a law firm website need to rank?

Most firm websites have a page for each practice area: car accidents, estate planning, consumer protection and so on. You need those. But they aren't enough on their own, because people don't always search by practice area. They search by situation.

A practice-area page answers "who handles this kind of case?" A situation page answers the question the person is actually typing. For example:

  • "What happens when a dealer can't fix my car under warranty?"
  • "I live in Arizona and a car dealership screwed me, I need a lawyer."
  • "Can a company run a background check on me without telling me?"

Situation pages work for two reasons. There's less competition for a specific question than for a broad term like "lawyer." And the person who finds a page that matches their exact problem is ready to call.

In the consumer law firm case, the winning move was building a small cluster of pages around one topic. Rob wrote 2 main pillar articles and 3 supporting articles, plus an infographic to earn links. Together they covered the topic from every angle someone might search. You can see the same pattern on a consumer law site we track today. A page on what happens when a dealer can't fix your car under warranty ranks around position 3 for that exact question.

Each page should have a clear headline, a direct answer near the top, short sections that answer follow-up questions, a plain call to action, and links to related pages on your site. Do the same for each city you serve, with real local detail on each page. How do you track calls and intake?

This is the step most firms skip, and it's the one that proves the work is paying off. Rankings and traffic are nice. Cases are what matter.

Set up a few simple things:

  • A tracking phone number on your website. It forwards to your main line but counts every call that came from the site. That's how the consumer law firm knew its website produced 20+ calls in six weeks.
  • A different tracking number on your Google Business Profile. Now you can compare map calls to website calls.
  • Form tracking. Count every contact form submission and tag where it came from.
  • An intake log. Whoever answers the phone should record the source, the case type and whether it was signed.
  • Fast follow-up. A lead who waits a day often hires the next firm. See our guide to lead generation for law firms for how to build a system around this.

Once calls are tracked, you can see which pages bring cases and write more like them. You'll also know if a paid channel is worth what it costs.

Often, yes, because the same things help. AI tools pull from websites, reviews and listings, so a firm with clear pages, consistent details and good reviews has more to work with.

We have data on this. From May 6, 2025 to September 3, 2026, we tracked 2,476 AI-referred visits to 500 pages across 18 websites. ChatGPT sent 87% of the visits that could be traced to a source. One consumer law firm site alone received 1,126 AI visits across 123 pages, and its auto fraud attorney page got 68 of them. It also ranks in Google for "auto fraud attorney" and "best lawyer to sue car dealership."

In a separate test, we asked ChatGPT, "I live in Arizona and a car dealership screwed me, I need a lawyer." It named that firm's Tucson office as an option.

A few limits to be honest about. Nobody can guarantee that an AI tool will mention your firm. Google searches and AI prompts are not the same thing. And these results come from our own sites, so yours may differ. What we can say is that building good local pages is one of the better bets you can make. What's different about SEO for lawyers in Los Angeles?

Los Angeles is a big, crowded market. Many firms compete for the same phrases, and the area is made up of many separate communities, each with its own searches. A few things matter more here:

  • Be specific. Rank for one practice area and one part of the county before you try to rank for all of it.
  • Use real local detail. Court locations, neighborhoods and local agencies show Google (and readers) that you actually work here.
  • Win reviews steadily. In a crowded map pack, a steady stream of fresh reviews separates you from firms that stalled.
  • Get proof of results. Specifics you can honestly share, within your bar's rules, build trust.

In May and June 2021, a Los Angeles law firm we worked with grew from 6,000 to 8,000 monthly website visitors to 16,000 in 30 days, which is 100% growth. We did it in four steps: optimize the conversion pages, optimize the traffic pages, apply links, and target new keywords with new content. Phone calls rose and the leads kept coming without paid ads. If you're in the area, see our SEO agency in Los Angeles page and the website SEO service.

How long does local SEO take for a law firm?

There's no fixed answer. In the consumer law firm case, the first page-one rankings showed up in about six weeks. In the Los Angeles case, traffic doubled in 30 days. Those are the faster outcomes, and they started from sites with room to improve.

A more realistic way to think about it:

  • The first few weeks: cleanup and setup. Fix the Google Business Profile, set up tracking, and audit your pages and keywords.
  • Weeks 4 to 8: new and improved pages begin to get indexed and move up for specific, less competitive phrases.
  • Months 3 to 6 and beyond: broader phrases, more calls and steadier results, as pages and reviews build up.

Competitive phrases take longer. A new site with no links takes longer. A site with existing authority and weak pages can move quickly. Anyone who promises a specific ranking by a specific date is guessing.

Should you do local SEO or run ads?

Most firms do both, but they work differently. Ads give you calls the day you turn them on and stop the day you stop paying. SEO takes longer to build, then keeps working without a per-click fee.

The consumer law firm in our case study spent $3,000 a month on ads before SEO. After organic leads rose 50%, it cut that to $300 a month. For lawyers, Google's Local Services Ads for lawyers are another option worth testing alongside SEO, since they appear above the map results. Use call tracking to compare what each channel actually costs per signed case.

What mistakes hold law firms back?

  1. Only having practice-area pages. You miss every searcher who describes their situation instead.
  2. One page for every city. Copying a page and swapping the city name adds nothing. Each page needs real, local content.
  3. Ignoring the Google Business Profile. Wrong hours, an old phone number or no recent reviews can cost you the map list.
  4. No call tracking. If you can't tell which pages bring cases, you can't make smart choices.
  5. Slow response to leads. You can win the ranking and still lose the case to a firm that picked up first.
  6. Writing for lawyers instead of clients. Plain English wins. Skip the legalese.
  7. Chasing rankings instead of calls. A page-one ranking that doesn't produce calls isn't a win.
  8. Expecting overnight results. Good work compounds. Check progress monthly, not daily.

Where should you start?

Start with what you can see. Search for your main practice area plus your city, then search the questions a client would ask. Note where your firm shows up, which pages come up for you, and who beats you. Then check that your Google Business Profile is complete and your phone numbers match everywhere.

If you want a second set of eyes, our Growth Leak Audit looks at where your firm is losing leads, from search to follow-up, and shows you where to fix first. It's a good place to begin before you spend on more marketing.

Common questions

What is local SEO for lawyers?

It's the work of making your law firm show up when someone nearby searches for legal help, in the Google map results and in the regular results. It includes your Google Business Profile, reviews, practice-area and situation pages, and call tracking.

How long does local SEO take to work for a law firm?

It depends on your starting point and your market. One consumer law firm reached 9 page-one rankings in about 6 weeks, and a Los Angeles firm doubled its website traffic in 30 days. Competitive phrases and newer sites usually take longer, and no one can guarantee a ranking date.

How much should a law firm spend on SEO?

It varies with your market and goals, so there's no honest one-size number. A better test is cost per signed case. In our consumer law firm case, organic leads rose 50% and the firm cut monthly ad spend from $3,000 to $300.

Is SEO better than Google Ads or Local Services Ads for lawyers?

They do different jobs. Ads bring calls right away and stop when you stop paying. SEO takes longer but keeps working. Most firms use both, and call tracking shows which one brings signed cases for less.

Can local SEO get my law firm recommended by ChatGPT?

It can help, since AI tools draw on websites, reviews and listings. In one test, ChatGPT named a firm's Tucson office when asked about a car dealership problem in Arizona. But no one can guarantee that an AI tool will name your firm.
