What 2,476 visits from ChatGPT and other AI tools reveal

The short version

Over 16 months, 18 websites received 2,476 visits from people who clicked through from an AI tool. ChatGPT sent 87% of the visits we could verify by source. The traffic was spread across 500 different pages, and more than half of the largest site's AI visits skipped the homepage. Pages that did well on Google often drew AI visits too.

Key findings

  1. ChatGPT dominates AI referral traffic. It sent 2,037 of 2,350 verified AI visits (86.7%) and reached every site we could verify. Perplexity was a distant second at 6.3%.
  2. AI traffic is concentrated. The two largest sites received 1,813 of the 2,476 visits (73.2%). Most sites received a little; a few received a lot.
  3. AI sends people past the homepage. 500 different pages received AI visits. At the largest site, 582 of 1,126 AI visits (51.7%) landed on one of 122 pages other than the homepage.
  4. Google and AI search reward the same pages. Pages that drew AI visits often had big Google footprints. The law firm homepage, with 544 AI visits, appeared for 6,315 Google query rows in the same period.
  5. Google searches are starting to sound like AI prompts. Pages receiving AI traffic showed up for searches like "can you sue a private seller for selling you a bad car." People are typing full questions, not keywords.
  6. It isn't just one industry. AI visits reached law firms, publications, a home service company, a product brand and marketing agencies. Legal sites drew the most, with 1,352 visits. (See what that means for lead generation for law firms.)

Which AI tools send website traffic?

ChatGPT, by far. We re-pulled source data for the 16 sites whose analytics we could still access, covering 2,350 of the 2,476 visits. ChatGPT appeared on all of them. Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Claude each sent smaller but steady streams. Six other tools sent a handful of visits between them.

"Six other AI tools": NotebookLM 3, Poe 2, Manus 1, Vertex AI Search 1, Lexis AI 1, iAsk 1. The two sites not included (a sports publication with 114 visits and a business news site with 4) no longer had analytics we could re-pull; their totals are counted everywhere else in this report.

Which kinds of websites get AI traffic?

All 18 websites in the dataset received at least one AI visit, but the spread was uneven. A California consumer law firm led with 1,126 visits. An entertainment and music publication followed with 687, spread across 204 pages, the widest reach of any site. We describe the sites by type rather than by name because several belong to clients.

Where do AI visitors land?

Often deep inside the site. AI tools answer specific questions, so they tend to link to the page that answers that exact question. At the California consumer law firm, the homepage got the most AI visits of any single page, but more than half of all AI visits went somewhere else: an auto fraud attorney page, a dealer fees article, a lemon law page, location pages and dozens more.

Do Google and AI search reward the same pages?

In this data, yes. We matched each AI-receiving page to its Google Search Console data for the same period. Many of the pages people reached from AI tools were also showing up on Google, often for hundreds or thousands of different searches.

PageAI visitsGoogle query rowsExample Google searches
Law firm homepage5446,315"auto fraud attorney", "dealership fraud attorney", "consumer protection lawyer"
California dealer fees article312,531"dealer fees in California", "9 fees to never pay a car dealership"
Auto fraud attorney page681,341"auto fraud attorney", "best lawyer to sue car dealership"
Private-seller fraud article251,283"private seller sold me a bad car", "can you sue a private seller for selling you a bad car"

Look at those searches. "Best lawyer to sue car dealership." "Can you sue a private seller for selling you a bad car." That's how people talk to ChatGPT. The line between a Google search and an AI prompt is getting thin, which is why we map every important Google keyword to the full question a buyer would ask an AI tool.

How to find AI traffic in your own Google Analytics

Group visits by session source and look for chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com and claude.ai. Count every label. On the largest site, ChatGPT visits were split three ways, and the newest label only started appearing in June 2026:

How GA4 labeled the visitChatGPT visits
chatgpt.com / (not set)557
chatgpt.com / referral210
chatgpt.com / ai-assistant135

If you only count "referral," you'd miss most of your ChatGPT traffic. Our lead tracking service sets this up so AI visits are counted correctly and followed through to leads and sales.

What this means for business owners

  1. Start with ChatGPT. It's where nearly 9 in 10 AI visits came from. Ask it the questions your buyers ask and see who it names.
  2. Build pages that answer one question each. AI tools link to the page that answers the exact question. A single "Services" page gives them nothing specific to send people to.
  3. Don't abandon SEO. The pages that drew AI visits were often strong on Google too. The two work together.
  4. Measure clicks, not mentions. Being named in an AI answer is nice. A visit to your site is what you can turn into a customer.

How we collected the data

  • Period: May 6, 2025 to September 3, 2026.
  • Websites: 18 websites that Mission Driven Brand runs or works on, out of 29 domains checked. The other 11 didn't have analytics connected for the full period, so they're left out rather than counted as zero.
  • What counts as an AI visit: a Google Analytics 4 session whose source was an AI tool: ChatGPT/OpenAI, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Microsoft Copilot, NotebookLM, Manus, Vertex AI Search, Lexis AI, Poe or iAsk. Regular Google and Bing search, direct visits and one hosted Manus page were excluded.
  • Pages: 500 pages could be identified. 68 visits had no identifiable landing page and are counted in site totals but not page counts.
  • Sources: per-tool counts were re-pulled on October 8, 2026 for the 16 sites still connected, covering 2,350 visits. Fifteen sites matched the original totals exactly; one publication came in 8 visits lower (679 vs. 687) because Google Analytics data shifts slightly over time.
  • Google data: Search Console query rows for the same pages and period.

What this data does not prove

  • It doesn't show the prompts people typed into AI tools. The Google searches above are real Google searches, not AI prompts.
  • It doesn't prove that any single change caused an AI tool to recommend a page.
  • It doesn't mean every AI visitor was a buyer.
  • It doesn't guarantee future results. No one controls what AI tools say.

Questions about the report

Which AI tool sends the most website traffic?

ChatGPT, by a wide margin. In this dataset it sent 2,037 of 2,350 verified AI visits (87%) and reached all 16 sites we could verify. Perplexity was second with 148 visits, then Gemini with 87.

Do AI tools send visitors to homepages or deeper pages?

Both, and often deeper. At the largest site, 582 of 1,126 AI visits (52%) landed on pages other than the homepage, spread across 123 pages. Across all 18 sites, 500 different pages received AI visits.

Does SEO still matter for AI search?

Yes. Many pages that received AI visits also had large Google footprints. The law firm's homepage, which drew 544 AI visits, appeared for 6,315 Google query rows in the same period.

How do I find AI traffic in Google Analytics 4?

Look at session source for domains like chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com and claude.ai. Count every medium. On one site, ChatGPT visits were split across three labels: (not set), referral and, starting in June 2026, ai-assistant.

Can this data prove that a specific change made ChatGPT recommend a page?

No. The data shows real visits from AI tools to real pages. It does not show the prompts people typed or prove that any single change caused a recommendation.
