What is AI search optimization?
AI search optimization means making your business the answer when someone asks an AI tool for help. Instead of scrolling through ten blue links, more people now ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude or Microsoft Copilot a full question and get one written answer. Google does the same thing with the AI Overviews at the top of many search results.
If your business is named in that answer, with a link, you get the visit. If it isn't, a competitor does.
You'll hear a few other names for the same work:
- GEO (generative engine optimization): the most common industry term. "Generative engine" just means an AI tool that writes answers.
- AEO (answer engine optimization): getting your content chosen as the direct answer to a question.
- LLM optimization: the technical name, after the large language models behind these tools.
They all describe the same goal: get named, get linked, get clicked.
Why does AI search matter for a local business?
Because the people asking AI for advice are often ready to buy. Someone who types "Who's a good lawyer if a car dealership lied to me?" into ChatGPT isn't browsing. They have a problem and want a name.
It's already happening at scale. Over 16 months, we tracked 2,476 visits from AI tools to 18 websites we run or work on. Those visits landed on 500 different pages and came from 11 AI sources, including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Copilot. One consumer law firm's site received 1,126 of them. See the charts in our AI Referral Traffic Report 2026, or the plain-English version in what 2,476 AI visits taught us.
And most local businesses haven't started. That's the opportunity: in many markets, the spot in the AI answer is still open.
How do AI tools decide which businesses to recommend?
No one outside these companies knows every detail, and anyone who claims to control the answers is overselling. But the patterns are clear, and they show up in our data again and again.
- They need to understand you. Your website has to say plainly who you are, what you do, where you work and who you help. Vague pages get skipped.
- They look for sources to quote. Many AI tools search the web before they answer. Pages that already rank well on search engines are easier for them to find and cite.
- They look for agreement. AI tools trust a business more when its website matches what reviews, directories, its Google Business Profile and articles about it say. Rob calls this digital consensus.
- They prefer specific answers. A page that answers one exact question, with real details, beats a general page that sort of covers everything.
How is AI search optimization different from SEO?
They're partners, not rivals. Here's the simple version:
| Traditional SEO | AI search optimization | |
|---|---|---|
| What people do | Type a few words into Google | Ask a full question in ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity |
| What they get | A list of links | One written answer, often with a few named sources |
| What wins | Relevant pages with strong links | Clear, specific answers the rest of the web agrees with |
| What you measure | Rankings, clicks, calls | Visits from AI tools, then calls and sales |
In our data, the two go hand in hand. The law firm's pages that drew AI visits also showed up on Google for searches like "auto fraud attorney" and "consumer protection lawyer." Strong SEO makes AI search easier, which is why our local SEO service and AI search work share the same foundation.
How does AI search optimization work, step by step?
Here's the process we use, in plain English.
1. Find what Google already trusts you for
Before writing anything new, look at what's working. Which pages show up on Google? Which already get AI visits? Strengthening a page that's halfway there is faster than starting from zero.
2. Learn how your buyers ask AI
People type short phrases into Google but ask AI full questions. The same buyer who searches "auto fraud attorney" might ask ChatGPT, "What kind of lawyer can help me sue a car dealership that lied to me?" Match the two, and one page can win both.
3. Make your pages easy to understand and quote
Answer the question in the first two or three sentences. Use the buyer's question as a heading. Add real details only you have: prices, timelines, results, examples. End with a short FAQ. Add structured data (schema) so machines can read who you are and what the page covers.
4. Build agreement across the internet
Make your business name, services, location and specialties match everywhere: your Google Business Profile, Yelp, industry directories, review sites and social profiles. Then earn mentions on other trusted sites, like local news, association pages, podcasts and guest articles. Real mentions, not press-release blasts.
5. Turn the visit into a customer
Someone who clicks from ChatGPT is ready to listen. The page has to finish the job with proof, a clear offer and an easy next step, like a phone number, a short form or an AI chatbot that answers their next question.
6. Track it
Measure visits from AI tools in Google Analytics, page by page, every month. Then follow those visits to calls and sales. That's how you know it's working.
What does an AI-ready page look like?
- A direct answer in the first two or three sentences.
- Headings written as the questions buyers actually ask.
- Specific facts: numbers, places, prices, examples.
- A real author with real experience, named on the page.
- A short FAQ at the end.
- Structured data that describes the business and the page.
- Fast loading and easy reading on a phone.
- One clear next step.
Every article on this site follows that format, including this one.
How do you measure AI search results?
Think of it as a ladder. Each step matters more than the one before:
- Mentioned: an AI tool names your business.
- Clicked: the person clicks through to your website.
- Trusted: your page answers their question and shows proof.
- Contacted: they call, book or fill out your form.
- Customer: the visit turns into money you can count.
To see the "clicked" step, open Google Analytics and look at traffic from sources like chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. To see the steps after that, you need every lead tracked to the sale, which is what our lead tracking service sets up.
It also helps to check the "mentioned" step by hand. Once a month, ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the five questions your buyers ask most, and write down who gets named.
What are the most common AI search mistakes?
- Chasing mentions instead of clicks. Being named next to three competitors pays nothing if no one visits.
- Keyword stuffing. It doesn't work on AI tools. Clear, specific answers do.
- Publishing generic AI-written content. If a page says what a thousand other pages say, there's no reason to cite it.
- Mismatched business details. A different address or service list on different sites makes AI tools less sure about you.
- Ignoring Google. Strong search rankings feed AI answers. Skipping SEO makes AI search harder.
- Trusting guarantees. No one controls what AI tools say. Be wary of anyone who promises a spot.
How long does AI search optimization take?
It depends on your market and how much trust your site already has. Some changes show up fast. In one case Rob shares in his video, a consumer law firm went from appearing in 11% of relevant AI answers to 40% in 27 days. Building broad authority in a competitive market takes months, the same as SEO.
The quickest wins usually come from strengthening pages that already show up on Google and fixing business details that don't match across the web.

Common questions
Is AI search optimization the same as GEO?
Yes. GEO (generative engine optimization), AEO (answer engine optimization) and AI search optimization all describe the same goal: getting your business named and linked in the answers AI tools write.
Does AI search replace SEO?
No. They work together. Many AI tools search the web before answering, so pages that rank well on Google are easier for them to find and cite.
Can anyone guarantee ChatGPT will recommend my business?
No. No one controls what AI tools say. A good provider builds the pages and outside mentions AI tools rely on, then shows you the visits they actually send.
How do I know if ChatGPT recommends my business?
Ask it the questions your buyers ask and see who it names. Then check Google Analytics for visits from chatgpt.com and other AI tools to see if people actually click through.
Which AI tools matter most for a local business?
Usually ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews and Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot. Your Google Analytics data shows which ones your own customers use.
